WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is an alternate treatment option for patients who suffer with chronic pain.

ESWT is a non-surgical treatment that passes short, intense energy soundwaves, travelling faster than the speed of light, into damaged tissues to increase blood flow and stimulate an acute inflammatory response designed to accelerate the body's natural healing process.

Through the breakdown of scar tissue shockwave therapy can help restore normal movement and function whilst rapidly reducing pain.

Shockwave therapy is a highly trusted treatment modality with both NICE guidance and FDA approval that is clinically proven to provide fast and effective results when combined with regular exercise.

  • What are the benefits of Shockwave Therapy?

There are many great benefits to shockwave theraphy incuding:

    • Fast Recovery
    • Non Invasive
    • No Anaesthesia
    • No Medication
    • Fast Treatment (10-20 minutes)
    • Significant clinical benefits within 6 to 8 weeks
  • How many sessions will I need?

All patients wishing to be treated using our Shockwave Therapy services will be required to attend an inital consultation. Your suitability for the treatment will be discussed during your initial consultation and sessions can be booked once recommended.

NICE guidelines recommend a minimum of 3 sessions with a week in between each session. In our experience, we have found most patients start to feel the benefit of their treatment after 4-6 sessions and offer discounted packages for patients wanting to book 4 or 6 consecutive weekly sessions following their initial consultation.

  • How is the treatment carried out?

Shockwave Therapy treatment is carried out in stages using different adaptors with varying levels of penetration. Recommended settings for frequency, pressure, and the shots required will vary based on the condition being treated and the patients tolerance.

Before the treatment starts we will position you so you are comfortable and we can easily access the area being treated. When ready a contact gel is applied to the affected area and we begin the treatment using our V-ACTOR massaging handpiece to improve microcirculation to the treatment area.

Once the massage stage is completed we will apply more contact gel if needed before the Shockwave Therapy treatment begins. The first phase of the treatment uses a large adaptor to treat the general area and identify the trigger points of your pain which we will focus on in the next stages of the treatment. This stage will end once all recommended shots are delviered.

The next stage of the treatment will target the trigger points identified in the initial phase using a smaller adaptor with greater penetration that will allow the shockwaves to penetrate deeper into the treatment area. Once again this stage will end once all the recommended shots have been delivered.

The final stage of the treatment will directly target the affected area with another adaptor that penetrates deeper than the ones used in the first two stages. At this stage most patients will no longer feel anything as the area being treated will become numb due to the effects of the treatment. Just like the previous stages treatment ends once all recommeneded shots have been delivered.

  • Will I experience any pain?

This really depends on the patient and their tolerance to the treatment. Most patients will not feel any pain during their treatment but some may experience mild pain or discomfort during their first session.

With all patieints we will ask at each stage of the treatment if they are experiencing any pain so adjustments can be made to help minimise any discomfort. With each stage the pain or discomfort you may experience will become less and less to the point where you may feel no pain at all due to the numbing effect of the treatment.

  • Are there any side effects?

Shockwave therapy has both NICE guidance and FDA approval for a large number of indications. When delivered by a qualified therapist, the treatment is largely risk and side effect free, making it a safe treatment for musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain. Most patients will not experience any side effects from the treatment.

Potential side effects at the site treated include:

    • Mild pain
    • Bruising
    • Redness
    • Swelling
    • Numbness

For most patients who do experience any side effects they will normally resolve within a few days of the treatment.

  • Does Shockwave Therapy have any Contraindications?

Shockwave Therapy would not be suitable for patients with any of the following Contraindications:
